Michael Cohen has had a number of distinct incarnations in the public imagination. First, he was Trump's thuggish attack-dog lawyer. Then, he was a Resistance hero. Then a somewhat tragic criminal. As of this month, he is the star witness who helped convict his old boss — doing so in the face of enormous skepticism about his fitness for that role. But Olivia Nuzzi and Andrew Rice really bring him to life in this story in a way that feels very new. Following Cohen through the trial, they try to make sense of him, as he tries to make sense of this intense recent phase of his life. Why, for instance, does he still miss his days with Trump so much, after all this? Cohen is not an inspirational person, but he's a very interesting and colorful one, and this feature — with its superlative reporting and storytelling — does full justice to both those qualities.
