Early Bezalel Silver Hanukah Lamp

This Hanukah lamp is an early example from Bezalel Academy of Arts & Design in Jerusalem. The academy was established in 1906 in Palestine and is now considered a vital art school for Israeli visual arts. This lamp dates to c.1920 and displays elements of design from Persia and Syria.

This work from Sam Gilliam is part of an exhibition entitled “Art Swings” that took place at the Maryland Art Place when Jack Rasmussen was the Executive Director. The artists were to imagine their work as a swing. This one, in the shape of an artist’s palette, can hang from a rope placed through the hole in the middle, thereby forming an art swing.
