Everything You Need to Know |
New technology comes with a lot of "hows," "whys," and "whens." From shipping timelines to smoker compatibility to network connectivity, we've compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions about our new RFX wireless system. And remember, if you don't see your question here, you can always call ourtrained customer care team, based right here in American Fork, Utah. |
The Only Wireless Meat Thermometer Setup You Can Rely On!

The short answer is becausethey don’t work. The long answer is a bit more complex. Competitors’ built-in ambient probe sensors give inaccurate readings because cold meat acts as a heat sink, pulling heat from the metal probe and skewing the measurement of the ambient sensor by 75°F or more. Some brands claim to have algorithms that compensate for this by making educated assumptions, but in our testing, we found them inaccurate. Even if these sensors were accurate, they’re placed in an evaporative cooling zone around the meat. This means your ambient sensor is not reading the accurate temperature of your whole cooker. This is especially problematic if you’re running a temperature-control fan, which will then overcorrect for the artificially lower reading. We include a Pro-Series® Air Probe with every RFX GATEWAY™ and RFX Starter kit. This separate probe plugs directly into RFX GATEWAY to allow for precise placement and true ambient temperature measurements. |

Depending on the transmission rate you select, you can usebetween 50 and 70RFX MEAT wireless probes with each RFX GATEWAY. We designed RFX to be an incredibly scalable solution for homes and businesses. |

Yes, RFX GATEWAY connects to your home or business Wi-Fi network and automatically sends data to ThermoWorks Cloud. You can access your cloud account via a web browser or our mobile app. |

Yes! (Our HQ is in Utah, the home of camping, so we’ve got you.) While RFX MEAT and RFX GATEWAY will always be connected by our robust, patent-pending sub-GHz radio frequency technology, you cancook offlinewith a direct gateway-to-phone Bluetooth® connection. You’ll still be able to read cooking data instantly in the ThermoWorks App. |
Both Signals and RFX connect toThermoWorks Cloud. Unlike some competing units that store data on your local device via their apps, all ThermoWorks data from all your devices goes to ThermoWorks Cloud. So although RFX and Signals do not physically connect to each other, they are both compatible with ThermoWorks Cloud. |

Currently, there's no solution for independent wireless ambient probes because they require a thermal buffer to protect the electronics and battery. In wireless probes, the meat acts as this buffer. Existing “shields” aren’t robust enough to protect electronics for extended periods (like a brisket cook) without acting as a heat sink. However, in the coming months, we will be addingseveral new RFX products. One of these will allow you to connect a Pro-Series probe to the RFX network, eliminating the need to place the gateway next to the cooker for ambient probe use. |
RFX’s range ensures transmission will blast through any cooker, including a cast-iron Dutch oven in a ¼-inch thick smoker. Using the ambient probe is totally optional. Some customers, especially those with pellet grills or familiar cooking setups, don’t use it. For those who prefer to monitor ambient temperatures as well, an upcoming RFX addition allows a wired ambient probe to transmit data to your RFX GATEWAY via its own separate transmitter, ensuring accurate ambient temperature readings without needing to place RFX GATEWAY next to the cooker. |
Yes! Thesub-GHz wireless technologyof RFX operates at a much lower frequency than Bluetooth—433 MHz—which translates to fewer signal peaks per second (longer wavelengths) and significantly better penetration through barriers. This lower frequency allows RFX to blast through thick metal smokers, kamado-style smokers, cast-iron Dutch ovens, home walls, or other robust obstacles, ensuring a strong, reliable connection no matter where you are. |
